Rebates for your home

High-efficiency products use less energy and can save you money. Rebates for energy efficiency upgrades are available to all current residential Nicor Gas customers. Participation is simple.

  1. Find a contractor. All products must be installed by a professional contractor unless noted. Air sealing, insulation and duct sealing work must be completed by approved contractors.
  2. Install new, qualifying products between June 1, 2016 and December 31, 2017.
  3. Apply within 90 days of installation or by January 31, 2018, whichever comes first, to receive the following rebates.

Equipment rebates

Smart thermostats

Additional qualifications
  • The thermostat must be installed on a system with residential-sized natural gas space heating equipment with an input capacity of < 300 MBTUH. 
  • Only smart thermostats approved by energySMART are eligible for a rebate.
  • Smart thermostats must be installed in a home with a working Wi-Fi connection. 
  • Smart thermostats replacing programmable thermostats qualify for the smart thermostat rebate.

Furnaces

Home and water heating packages

Additional qualifications Storage water heaters
  • Storage water heaters must be installed as part of a home and water heating package and are not eligible for a stand-alone rebate. 
  • The natural gas storage water heater must have an Energy Factor (EF) ≥ 0.67 and a tank size ≤ 55 gallons. 
  • Instantaneous (tankless) water heaters are not eligible.

Programmable thermostats

  • Programmable thermostats must be installed as part of a home and water heating package and are not eligible for a stand-alone rebate.
  • The thermostat must be installed on a system with residential-sized natural gas space heating equipment with an input capacity of < 300 MBTUH.
  • The programmable thermostat must be capable of maintaining separate programs for weekdays and weekends, with at least two temperature settings for each program.
  • The programmable thermostat rebate is available for qualifying thermostats installed in an existing home or a new addition. Programmable thermostats installed in homes built after June 2015 are not eligible for a rebate. Homes built after June 2015 are required to have a thermostat capable of maintaining separate settings per the Illinois Energy Conservation Code.

Air sealing and insulation rebates

Air sealing

Duct sealing

  • 60 percent of the ducts must be located in unconditioned space and all accessible ducts must be sealed.

Attic insulation

  • Attic insulation areas include attic flat and slope; attic flat includes any flat areas above a conditioned space.
  • Attic air sealing must be completed to BPI standards to qualify for an attic insulation rebate.
  • Attic insulation in a closed or sloped cavity is only available where it is not possible to insulate up to R49, in compliance with IL Energy Code R101.4.3.
  • Attic insulation rebates are $0.50 per square foot where the precondition is ≤R19. Rebates are not available if the precondition is >R30.

  • Attic insulation rebates are $0.30 where the precondition is >R19, up to R30. Rebates are not available if the precondition is >R30.

Wall insulation

  • Wall insulation areas include exterior walls, knee walls and skylights.
  • Wall insulation is not available as a stand-alone rebate. To be eligible for a rebate, one of the following must be met:
    • The project includes qualifying air sealing and attic insulation.
    • Air sealing and attic insulation has been previously completed through the Nicor Gas and ComEd Home Energy Savings Program and no major renovation has been undertaken since that time.
  • Wall insulation must be completed after June 1, 2016 in order to qualify for a rebate.
  • As a pre-condition, the walls must be uninsulated or ≤R5, and they must then be insulated to at least R13, or in compliance with state or local code, whichever is higher.

Additional qualifications
  • Wall insulation areas include foundation sidewalls.
  • Wall insulation is not available as a stand-alone rebate. To be eligible for a rebate, one of the following must be met:
    • The project includes qualifying air sealing and attic insulation.
    • Air sealing and attic insulation has been previously completed through the Nicor Gas and ComEd Home Energy Savings Program and no major renovation has been undertaken since that time. 
  • Wall insulation must be completed after June 1, 2016 in order to qualify for a rebate.
  • As a pre-condition, the walls must be uninsulated or ≤R5, and they must then be insulated to at least R13, or in compliance with state or local code, whichever is higher.
