What is a public sector facility?
A property which is controlled or owned by the government and is funded through taxation. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- K-12 public schools
- Colleges and universities
- Hospitals and health clinics
- Local, state, or federal government buildings
How do I know if I’m an eligible customer?
All current Nicor Gas commercial and industrial customers on all rate classes are eligible to participate in energySMART. Self-directed customers are not eligible.
What are the eligible purchase and installation dates?
Equipment must be purchased and installed between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 to qualify for the current rebate amounts. Offers are valid from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019, or until funds are depleted, whichever comes first.
I installed qualifying equipment, but it was purchased and installed before December 31, 2018. Can I still get a rebate?
Applications for products installed on or before December 31, 2018 must be submitted by January 31, 2019 to be eligible for a rebate.
I purchased qualifying equipment prior to or on December 31, 2018, but it was not installed until January 1, 2019 or later. Can I still get a rebate?
Yes, if you purchased qualifying equipment prior to or on December 31, 2018 and it was installed January 1, 2019 or later, your installation and application are subject to current energySMART rules and requirements. Review the rebate application for complete details.
How do I apply for a rebate?
There are two ways to apply: you can apply online, or you can download the rebate application, print it out, and mail it in along with your sales receipt or invoice. Refer to each application for specific requirements.
What documentation do I need to include with my application?
All rebate applications must include a contractor invoice or proof of purchase receipt consisting of:
- Contractor name and contact information (if applicable)
- Business/account holder name and installation address
- Installation date
- Equipment/product manufacturer and model
- Total installed cost (itemized by each piece of qualifying equipment)
- Proof of payment or payment terms (balance due of zero, financing terms or paid-in-full stamp)
- Any other rebate-specific requirements
My equipment/product is not listed on the online application system but it meets all energySMART requirements. Can I still apply for a rebate?
If your equipment/product meets all rebate requirements, but it is not listed in the drop-down menu on the online application system or in our qualified products list, you may be eligible for a rebate. You must apply for your rebate using a paper application. Please submit a copy of the manufacturer specification sheet with your rebate application to the rebate submission address listed on the application.
When are applications due?
Online applications must be submitted online, and mail-in applications must be postmarked within 90 days of installation, or by January 31, 2020, whichever comes first. Products must be installed and fully operational prior to submitting a rebate application.
How long will it take to receive my rebate?
energySMART strives to process rebates as quickly as possible. The best way to ensure timely receipt of your rebate check is to provide a complete application with all required documentation. You will receive your rebate check approximately six to eight weeks after your application has been reviewed and approved.
Where can I purchase a qualified product?
You can purchase qualifying products wherever the equipment is sold (including local retailers, online retailers, or through a professional contractor). Only equipment that meets the efficiency guidelines defined in the rebate applications will be eligible for the rebate (please check the rebate applications for details on efficiency levels and requirements). Do I need to have a contractor install the equipment for the rebate?
Equipment and products must be installed by a professional contractor according to manufacturer specifications and state and local codes, with the exception of steam traps, programmable thermostats and pre-rinse spray valves. While the use of a professional contractor is not required for these products, it is strongly encouraged. This helps to ensure safety and the proper installation of natural gas equipment. Nicor Gas and energySMART do not endorse nor guarantee any contractors or their work.
I am a landlord of an eligible commercial or industrial property. Am I eligible for the rebates?
If the Nicor Gas account is in your name you are eligible for the rebates. Please complete and submit the rebate application. If you are applying for a rebate for a property you own, but the Nicor Gas account number is in your tenant’s name, you must supply the following information.
- Installation address
- Nicor Gas account holder’s name, account number and information
- The itemized contractor invoice/proof of purchase receipts, signed by the purchaser of the equipment/product
- All applicable purchase invoices and required documentation
- A completed rebate application, signed by the tenant (Nicor Gas account holder), with all required documentation
How can I take advantage of instant discounts?
Only contractors that are part of energySMART’s Contractor Circle network can offer instant discounts. Please discuss this option with you contractor to see if you can receive the rebate amount taken directly off the invoice, instead of mailed as a check.
Will someone come to my facility to inspect?
By signing your rebate application, you have agreed to allow energySMART or anyone working on behalf of energySMART to inspect any of the installed products.
Will a rebate impact my taxes?
Please consult with your tax advisor to determine if rebates for energy efficiency equipment and products are considered taxable by the IRS.
My electric utility is offering rebates for similar products. Can I apply and receive rebates for that program as well energySMART?
Only one rebate is available for the same product, with the exception of qualifying joint ComEd/Nicor Gas rebate offers (i.e. Nicor Gas for heating equipment and electric utility for air conditioning) as well as add-on federal tax credits and any current manufacturer or other third-party incentives.
